One of the most amazing presents I have ever received was my mom's full length mink fur coat. My grandmother had given it to her over twenty years ago, and because my mom is not a fur wearer, she gave it to me along with the freedom to do WHATEVER I wanted to it. I could hardly wait to get started and caught myself spending all of my free time stalking Pinterest for inspiration, searching for furriers in NYC, and dreaming of what my coat could be transformed into.
Through countless hours of researching somewhere to go to transform the coat I landed on Madison Avenue Furs located in the fur district in NYC. I lugged my fur into the city and met with Mitch Cohen who patiently listened to all of my wants and wishes. He took my measurements and talked me through all of the changes that could be done: shoulder pad removal, reshaping the outdated arms, cutting 20 inches off from the bottom, replacing all of the hooks/hardware, making a removal hood, and reworking the collar.
Less than two weeks after my original meeting with Mitch, I went back in to pick up my new coat and I have never been so obsessed with an inanimate object. With the left over fur from the bottom of the coat they had made earmuffs, a headband, a removable hood as well as monograming my initials on the inside of the jacket. My new coat is better than I ever dreamed and I can hardly wait to wear it on chilly days in NYC next winter. This was such a fun project. I love that I will have something for the rest of my life which will always remind me of not only my mom, but my grandmother as well!
